It is time once again for a Quilt Along and this time it is a mystery quilt for our CQA/ACC members.
This year’s quilt along is a mystery quilt entitled “Meet You in Manitoba” and will consist of monthly installments released in the CQA/ACC website member studio on the third Wednesday of the month from December until May. To kickoff the quilt along, the supply list will be released on the third Wednesday of November (November 19).
Mystery quilt designer Pam says about the project, “each section that you make will fit beautifully in the overall quilt, or you can decide to use each month’s challenge as a mini quilt, centre piece, table runner, or place mat. They will each be a Manitoba – and Canadian – conversation starter.”
Again, designer Pam comments, “… we are always on about using up your scrap pile, but what if you’re a new quilter and don’t have one? Or maybe you downsized your quilting room, and let some of your fabrics go? There are definitely elements of this challenge that will encourage you to use scraps, but I know when I first started quilting, I did not have a scrap pile. Shopping, swapping, and gifts were (and still are) the answer! Shop for new fabric, support your favourite designers or find some new ones, participate in a fabric swap, and/or ask your family for a gift card.”
“When I was invited to design this quilt, I started looking at the region to borrow from the colours, symbols, and spirit of the province. My goals include encouraging you to take to your sewing machine, and have some fun. If it’s been a while since you made something just for you, or you would like something special to enter in a guild challenge, or you simply want patterns that apply to any and all levels of skill – there’s plenty coming!
“As quilters, we usually work with quilting cotton, but with this quilt comes an opportunity to do something else…I mean, have you ever noticed how woolly a Plains Bison is? Or how soft a polar bear looks from a distance? These animals are both official symbols of Manitoba and I’m just saying that if you wanted to incorporate some texture into this quilt, I wouldn’t discourage you!”
