Visit the rest of the museum either before or after your session, as your ticket to this event includes general admission to the entire museum.

Description of the quilt:

The project took fourteen years in research and conception, four years to complete its creation by artist Laurie Swim. It was unveiled at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in June 2017 and on display until December 6th, the 100th anniversary of  the explosion. The entire piece was donated to the museum by a patron as a gift to the people of Nova Scotia.

The quilted centrepiece, 6’4″x 8′ 8″ consists of four scenes set in a background of snow dyed indigo blue cotton fabric. The indigo is a reference to scars victims were left with when an oily black rain coated them after the explosion. Mixed with the pigment of their skin the scars turned blue. Dying the fabric with snow refers to the horrific snow storm that followed and hindered rescue efforts. There are other references in the background as well along with the flying girl, the story of young Barbara Orr who was picked up by the blast and landed on Fort Needham Hill a quarter of a mile from where she stood. In later life, Barbara, who lost her entire immediate family, donated the bells, part of the memorial on that same hill.

Accompanying the centrepiece, are 20 separate windows where many people were standing in front of when the explosion shattered the glass. This caused eye injuries and blinded many. The nine panels in each of these windows have twelve names of the 1,946 victims recorded and were also translated into Braille. The dots were beaded by over a hundred volunteers over a period of a year.

Laurie also wrote the book, Hope and Survival, a Story of the Halifax Explosion, for the children of Nova Scotia to understand the destruction and recovery of historically, the largest man made explosion prior to Hiroshima that devastated the north end of Halifax. This book has been adopted by the school libraries in the province.
