African Nova Scotian Quilts 1895-Present – Woods – June 8, 3 pm – 4:30 pm

Class Title:  African Nova Scotian Quilts 1895-Present

Class Code: L-Thu3-DW

Teacher’s Name: David Woods

Date and Time: Thursday, June 8, 3 pm – 4:30 pm

Type of Class: Lecture

Fee: $15

Description:  Artist, curator David Woods began researching and photographing quilts in his home province of Nova Scotia in 1997. Initially this was motivated by his curatorship of In This Place– the first ever exhibition of Black Nova Scotian art that included 6 quilts (Anna Leonowens Gallery et al 1998). It was also motivated by the exclusion of Black quiltmakers from mainstream exhibitions, publications and discussions of Nova Scotia’s quilt heritage to that point despite quiltmaking was a deeply rooted craft practiced in most of the province’s over 3O Black communities as far back as the 18th century.

Through his documentation, Woods was able to survey the character of the Black Nova Scotian quiltmaking traditions and identify the idiosyncrasies of that tradition. Woods observed that in selected communities improvised quilts strip quilts were the norm and there was little interest in creating the standard (and carefully measured) popular quilt patterns.  He also noted that Black quiltmakers gravitated to particular quilt patterns such as Log Cabin, Flying Birds, Northern Star, as their symbolism resonated with the history and culture of Black Nova Scotians whose ancestors had escaped enslavement in the southern United States in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Talk with power point presentation

Woods talk and powerpoint presentation begins with the oldest known ‘Black’ quilt in the province- a Flying Birds pattern from Shelburne NS (c. 1880), then takes us on a journey through the proceeding decades of quiltmaking across the province’s Black communities. Quilts shown include strip quilts, Underground patterns, family album quilts. The presentation ends with a selection of quilts from ‘The Secret Codes’- a collection of picture quilts created by the Vale Quilters of New Glasgow and currently on tour across Canada. Woods also talks about his years of organizing and presenting quilt exhibitions in the province including an exhibition tour with quilters Marylee  Bendolph and Louisiana Pettway of the famed Gees Bend Quiltmakers of Alabama.
