Curved, turned-back bias edges make Janet’s three-dimensional flying geese seem to float above the background fabric. It looks complicated . . . but it’s easy to do.
In this class, you’ll learn Janet’s clever techniques and begin work on a 16-block medallion-style mini-quilt or the full 36-block Sunflower Power quilt.
[/et_pb_workshop2][et_pb_workshop2 admin_label=”What If…” _builder_version=”3.0.92″ workshop_name=”301 – What If…” animation=”off” background_layout=”light” header_font_size_tablet=”51″ header_line_height_tablet=”2″ body_font_size_tablet=”51″ body_line_height_tablet=”2″ workshop_level=”Advanced” image_url=”https://canadianquilter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/J-Barker-What-If1.jpg” workshop_time=”Saturday June 2 (8:30-4)” workshop_length=”6 hours” supplylist_list_url=”https://canadianquilter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Janet-Barker-What-if-Supply-List-1.pdf” workshop_location=”Vancouver Convention Centre Room: 117″ kit_fee=”11 for Pattern” workshop_fee=”160″]
What if you start with a basic uneven nine patch block, and tweak it? What if you choose several corner options, side options, and centre options, and mix them all up?
By shifting and rotating nine elements, folding back bias edges, and changing colour placements, you can create a dazzling array of blocks and make a stunning sampler quilt.
Janet’s folded-fabric techniques use straight piecing to make sharp star points and gentle, pretty curves. There’s no fussing with templates. The block are easy to make, yet look complicated.
You may have seen folded corner squares and folded rectangles in 3D flying geese. After this class, you’ll also be able to make folded triangles and position slashed squares and rectangles in various ways to provide much more variety in your quilt blocks.

Gloria Loughman Workshops
Doorways have intriguing stories to tell us. They’re created from a variety of materials and showcase a range of colours and textures. Some are elaborate, some are commonplace, and many are in various states of disrepair as materials weather, paints fade and peel, and metals rust.
In this class, you’ll create a small quilt based on a doorway. You can bring your own design or use one of Gloria’s three patterns.
You’ll learn how to examine a building’s layers, decide on a colour palette, construct each layer separately, and outline the main features with a thin, dark line to create a more graphic image.

A forest is often filled with a play of light as the sun filters through to some areas and leaves others mysteriously shady.
In this class, you’ll learn how to create this dappled effect by tiling a background of fused small squares or rectangles in a variety of colors. You’ll then add detailed trees, branches, and leaves in the foreground, to create perspective and interest.
You’ll work from a photo or sketch, using fusing, fabric painting, free-motion stitching, and quilting techniques to bring your landscape to life.
Gloria provides a pattern and suitable hand-dyed fabrics. You can choose stunning autumn tones, the crisp new greens of spring, or the grey and white tones of the bleak midwinter.
This workshop is suitable for both new and experienced quilters.
