Fire in the Sky
Entry #: AL 2026
Entrant: Juanita Sauve
Dimensions: 20" x 16"
Materials: Commercial and cotton hand-dyes, tulle, Angelina fibres and fabric paint accents.
Techniques: Free-motion embroidery (heavy), machine appliqué, fused, raw-edge appliqué, machine piecing and domestic-machine quilting with a stitch regulator. Appliquéd after quilting.
Artist’s Statement: After the tornadoes of September 2018, news reports showed skies lit up in brilliant yellow and saffron, inspiring this piece, part of a series. Sky colours are blended using a combination of narrow fabric strips, tulle and Angelina, heavily machine-stitched with coordinating threads. Quilting lines represent radiating, crepuscular rays.
