We, the Sarnia Quilters’ Guild, held our triennial quilt show in June 2023. The theme, Water Under the Bridge, fits
Sarnia’s location where the waters of Lake Huron rush in to the mouth of the St Clair River. We showcased 275 member
quilts in four categories, Art, Bed, Cuddle, and Decorative. In addition a special detail of quilts, “Inspired by David Taylor”, was hosted with seven entries. Vendors, some with demos, and our Boutique filled with homemade treasures drew lots of attention. Visitors were invited to explore our Community Projects which include hospital pillow cases, literacy bags, preemie blankets, charity quilts, placemats for meals on wheels (a guild challenge), as well as our contributions to Quilts of Valour, while enjoying lunch or a snack from our café. Spectators were invited to identify their quilt of choice in each category and later at our banquet, awards were presented. Janet Emery’s stunning quilt (see photo) won best of show quilt and was awarded the CQA
rosette. The weather for both days was perfect to accommodate the 700+ spectators to our show.
The Sarnia Quilters’ Guild is 45 years and 135 members strong. In the 2022-23 year our Guild members engaged in a variety of workshops: The Crazy Patch Quilt with Freda Porter, The Quilted Jacket with Sandra Thomas, Intro to Sashiko with Christine Golub, Interleave and Posh Bunny with Linda McLaren, and Intro to Wool Applique with Jan Lancaster. We had guest
speakers that included Gunnel Hag – My Painted Quilts, Jane Hauprich – Making Negative a Positive, Heather Maslen – Stash Challenges, and Linda McLaren – the Quilting Biker. We also joined together for the National Quilting Day enjoyed in our homes over Zoom with a fun pizza kit for lunch. Other entertaining events included a “Fally Jolly”, a fun fall “jolly”, or car trip, where we traveled in groups as we played games and visited Quilt Shops around southwestern Ontario.
The 2024 year is looking great with lots of new and exciting Speakers and Instructors and lots of time for renewing our sisterhood in person! Our next show will be in June of 2026. Hope to see you then!
