Paula Rafferty is a textile artist, quilter, longarmer, and teacher who lives in Limerick, Ireland.
She has a very distinctive longarming technique she calls fragmenting, which she uses to make images (printed on whole cloth) look like mosaics.
Paula also makes patchwork quilts and applies similarly dense quilting to them.
Originally from Dundalk, Paula studied fashion and teaching at the Limerick School of Art and Design, and never went back home. She’s not only a quilt instructor, but also teaches art/craft/design in the Education Centre in Limerick Prison.
Currently, she’s obsessed with quilting, but also enjoys dyeing fabric, felting, and fashion…pretty much anything to do with fabric.
Solus
For several years Paula wanted to make a quilt of her daughter and herself, and finally accomplished this goal during the lockdown of 2020. They had great fun taking and selecting a selfie to use. After some editing in Photoshop she sent the pic to a printer.
Solus (the Irish word for light) is a whole cloth quilt, layered in the traditional way, and then densely quilted along the outlines.
Paula says: “This wee beauty is one of the two lights that keeps me going and brightens my world, every day.”
Emoture
Inspired by a Temperature Quilt made by a friend, Paula stared Emoture on the day she turned fifty, and finished it on her 51st birthday—a year and a day of temperatures and emotions!
