Ookpik

Entry #: TT 1709

Entrant: Colette Dumont

Dimensions: 51" x 62"

Materials: 100% metallic/37% nylon.

Techniques: Hand appliqué, machine appliqué, couching, thread painting, trapunto, beading, embellishments, bias work, machine piecing, original, digitized embroidery, domestic-machine quilting and longarm quilting with a stitch regulator.

Credits: The photo, from Gilles Archambault, was used only for the owl. The background of the center medallion is based on my photo of my home exterior.

Artist’s Statement: To represent a Snowy owl, I chose a thread-painting method. Because of the fabric shrinking, I could make the small, 3D effect on the centre medallion. The border is a reverse-facing binding and is beaded. The name, "Ookpik", is Snowy owl in the Inuktitut language.
