The Wolf Brothers was constructed with fused applique and a small amount of thread painting. The eyes and shadows were created using acrylic paints and pens. The entire quilt from the first drawings to the hanging sleeve took seven months to make. It was then quilted on my domestic machine using various Superior brand threads. I like the way the wolves appear to be watching the viewer from every angle. They are relaxed but watchful.

I live in Inuvik, NWT, a town of 3000 people located north of the Arctic Circle in the Mackenzie Delta.
The Mackenzie Delta is mostly wetlands covered with low lying shrubs and black spruce trees that grow narrow thin and tilted as they try to maintain a footing in this permafrost covered inhospitable landscape.
Nourishment is a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the Black Spruce trees that thrive and by extension the people that choose to call this part of the country home.

This quilt was originally a class I took to learn different skills and techniques which ended up being invaluable in my quilting journey. I envisioned the quilt constructed from low volume fabrics and not the traditional reds and greens of Christmas. Though I pieced the quilt it was beautifully quilted by Jennifer Watson.

I made this quilt for by nephew Alex as wedding gift when he married his sweetheart Kate. I chose the Border Creek Station Pattern Company pattern “Abigail’s Freedom Garden” then changed the appliqué to the raw-edge appliqué designs by Michele Hill from her books inspired by William Morris. This allowed me to work in the birds, acanthus leaves and pomegranates that have symbolism for a marriage quilt. The lovely colour scheme of blues, tans and cream was chosen by the bride, but no one saw the quilt until it was done.

This was my first fibre book. All the pages were made and given to me from friends around the world. In exchange I sent them pages for their fibre books. The pockets on the back were filled with postcards, letters, brochures and fabric. I thought this was a good example of fabric that travel and made by a group.

This quilt was very labour intensive. There are four yards of material in the Celtic knot work. Each petal and leaf of the flower blocks was fussy cut and sewn by hand.

A Sallie B. Pate pattern and a variety of Batiks, donated by a quilter, are the reason for this quilt. The title of the quilt is my expression of gratitude. The piecing and the quilting were done in one step by domestic machine.

While attending the Road to California Quilt show in Ontario, California I found the pattern “Little Bitzs” and fell in love with it. I thought of what a wonderful way to use scraps. When I got home and took the pattern apart I wondered ” what was I thinking ” and sat down and started cutting. I guess the intimidating aspect was the 1/4 inch finished strips and the first one being 1/4″by 1/4″. I enjoyed the challenge for it was my first paper piecing pattern I had ever done and I will do more.

Baltimore Variations is a design collaboration between Linda Earl of Village Fabrics in the UK and Kathleen Starr of Starr Fabrics on the US. While making this quilt I was also teaching a class at Thimbles and Things in Orillia focusing on Baltimore Quilts and their many techniques. I have always been drawn to Baltimore Album quilts but the addition of the pieced sashings and borders gave it such a modern dimension that this became the one that I HAD to do.

On different occasions while shopping at Central Sewing, my husband Jeff saw “Joan’s Town” on display. He said, “this is so cool, would you like it?” I said, “no thank you, politely.” In 2011 just before Christmas he said, “a lady is going to call sometime, please get her address and send her a cheque for the dollar amount she tells you, please.” Then one day the phone rings and this lady said, “Hi, I am Joan Statz, your husband said to call you with my information and a price.” I said, “Oh my God! He didn’t!” Silence … Then she said, “Oh dear, yes he did.” After a nice visit with Joan, I mailed off a cheque for my Christmas present. Then I had a little talk with Jeff! He told me he worked really hard several times trying to convince Joan to make the kit. He was so excited that she called. My Christmas gift was amazing and overwhelming. I should have taken a picture of all the stuff. So not knowing anything about appliqué I took a class from Joan. She is a wonderful teacher. While at the class a lady came up to me and said to thank my husband for talking Joan into making the kit because she bought one also. I started to work on the village in 2013 and worked on it on and off for awhile. In June 2015 it was time to “get it done” and it went every Wednesday to sewing with the ladies at the church, to many different weekend retreats, and there were lots of them, and every spare moment at home for months I worked on my project. “The Village” became an obsession. Someone would ask, “what are you working on?” And always it was “The Village!” Finally it is finished. I am having fun watching people look at it and hear their comments. I have called it “Robin’s Village” because that is all Robin did for a long time. Thank you Jeff for my Christmas present. “I love it!”
