Vernon Silver Star Quilters reached 161 members in 2018 with another 26 lifetime members who’ve reached the awesome age of 80! Our 2 meetings on the first and third Thursday morning each month are filled with laughter and lots of information about what’s going on. We have separate monthly subgroup meetings for Newcomers, the art group QuArtz, Scrappy Quilts, Stars, and Classics.
The workshop committee held 7 open sewing days including New Year’s Eve and charity sewing days and 4 workshops with out-of-town teachers Dianne Jansen from Pritchard, Susan Purney Mark from Pender Island, Katje Marek from Kamloops and Julie Faulkner, a Judy Neimeyer instructor from New Westminster. Several classes were also taught by local
members – tree skirts by Sharon Roddy, fabric wreaths by Georgia Johnson and Handi-Bag assembly by Rene Guytan.
Spring and Fall retreats were filled up with waiting lists at the Gardom Lake Bible Camp. Our retreats are so popular that
due to limited spaces, interested participants now enter a lottery for a chance to attend.
In total throughout the year, the guild made and donated 144 quilts to the Greater Vernon community with over 90 going to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital neonatal and chemotherapy patients, and others to Friends of First Nations, Vernon Women’s Transition House and Grand Forks flood victims among others.
Not to be forgotten, in 2018 our President Susan Wilson and Vice President Kate Bennett organized the guild’s move to a new location. Getting us all to learn new operating procedures and new routines for our meetings, our classes and our stored items at the new location took some doing but we are happily settled now in our new home at Grace Bible Church on Silver Star Road.
