In 2006, the University of Alberta’s renowned Clothing and Textiles Collection was expanded with the generous donation of 677 quilts from Alvin and Gloria Rosenberg. The collection of antique Canadian, American, and British quilts was gathered by Gloria Rosenberg over two decades of her career as a collector and dealer in Toronto. The historical importance of these textiles and the designation as “Class A” Canadian Cultural Property made this collection a valuable resource for students and academics at the University of Alberta and for national and international researchers studying quilt culture and practice.

In the presentation “Piecing It Together: Knowledge Creation in the Rosenberg Quilt Collection”, Vlada Blinova will focus on the collection’s historical time line from the transfer of the quilts to the University of Alberta, through the research, conservation, storage, and digitization initiatives, to the current use of the collection in teaching, research, and exhibition activities. The presentation will include a discussion of the Rosenberg Quilt Collection contents (Amish and Mennonite crib quilts, Depression-era flour-sack, appliqué, Victorian silk crazy quilts, etc.) and challenges of working with the historic material without provenance.

The Seven Sisters – 60 Degrees of Inspiration Quilt is inspired by the constellation called The Pleiades. Depending on which culture you reference, the existence of these seven “sister” stars is explained in that culture’s star lore. I was particularly inspired to create this simple and modern design because it is the only reference in star lore that gives origin to the LGBTQ community. I chose fabrics that were representative of this community in hopes of stitching myself into the fabric of this piece. I invite participants to choose and incorporate their own fabrics so that they too can stitch themselves or people we hold dear into their quilt. Selected fabrics might be inspired by your favourite colours, clothing from family/friends, representative fabrics of things you love, etc. Three methods of cutting sixty degree triangles will be demonstrated as well as tips for accurate construction.  This project will result in a queen size quilt.

Quilts are not what comes to mind as a medium used for collecting historical information about a province. However, documenting quilts throughout Alberta for the past six years has revealed that quilts have interesting stories to tell. Sourcing quiltmaker’s diaries, memoirs, autobiographies, family history books and letters, Assistant Curator Lucie Heins shares numerous stories about the lives of quiltmakers, their contributions to their family and their community. These stories capture Alberta’s history during the early settlement of the province.

Diana (Gagné) Nadeau packed up the wedding and baby quilts she made as part of her settler’s effects when leaving the province of Quebec for their new home in Pickardville, Alberta. She was among the many French Canadians that settled around Edmonton. The pieces for Selma (Danielson) Nelson’s Crazy Quilt were made while she and her sisters-in-law travelled with the Canadian National Railway crew preparing meals for the Nelson Brothers construction workers. This stretch of railroad from Camrose to Kelsey, Alberta is noted for being the longest stretch of straight railway in North America. Minerva (McLeod) Horton made a quilt as a visual travel diary of her family’s journey to the Peace Country in 1912 when Minerva was only six years old. It provides a glimpse of the McLeod’s four and a half month-long journey from Whiteriver, Ontario to their new home in Waterhole, Dunvegan, Alberta. Come and discover Alberta’s history one quilt at a time.

Numerous heritage quilt documentation projects have been conducted throughout North America and around the world. With the United States leading the way, these projects help to recapture the history of heritage quilts and their makers before this information is lost. In 2010 the Western Canadian History Program at the Royal Alberta Museum was working on an Alberta Craft Research Initiative to document the material culture of craft production within the Alberta context. Recognizing that very little had been written about Alberta quilts and quiltmakers, Assistant Curator, Lucie Heins initiated the Alberta Quilt Project. Phase one (2010-2013) documented twenty-first century quilters and quilting trends. Phase II (2013-2019) documented heritage quilts made in Alberta or brought as part of the settler’s effects to Alberta. This presentation expounds on the outcomes of the research, providing a glimpse of Alberta’s quiltmakers and their quilts.

Length: 1 Hour
Location: ROYAL ALBERTA MUSEUM
Day & Time: Wednesday, June 17 - see times below.
Fee: $20 Adults, $15 for Seniors 65+

Historically, a quilt bed-turning was a social event. Quilters would bring their finished quilts to a social gathering hosted at a quilter’s home. Due to limited space quilts were placed on a bed one on top of the other. As each quilt was reviewed and then folded down, the next quilt was ready for viewing. This was the precursor to the “Show and Tell”. In a museum setting, the quilt bed-turning is a unique way of telling the history and accompanying story for quilts. The Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) is pleased to be able to offer such an event. This is a rare opportunity to come and view quilts from the Royal Alberta Museum’s collection vaults. You won’t want to miss it. Space it limited.
