0301 – Embrace the Chaos - An Exploration in Controlled Randomness

Difficulty: All Levels
Length: 6 Hours
Day & Time: Wednesday June 12, (8:30-4)
Fee: $150

Libs Elliot is known for using computer code and algorithms to create her random quilt patterns. Using only paper and pencils – no computers required! – Libs will walk you through a series of worksheet exercises that mimic her code. By using controlled elements in a random way, each participant will follow Libs’ steps and end up with – surprise! – a random quilt pattern layout.

Once the layouts are complete, you will start cutting up your fabrics, work on block piecing and top construction. At the end of the class, you will leave with your very own quilt plan and all the knowledge required to finish the project at home..

We will cover strip-piecing and how to cut equilateral and half-square triangles. Libs will share tips on ironing, pinning and how to line up seams. Participants will be able to make choices on what kind of stripes they want to make and how they want to cut their block pieces so, in the end, no two compositions are alike. During the course of the class, we’ll share our progress for group input. By the end of the session, participants will have the knowledge and motivation to complete the project at home (if not completed in class).

This workshop is a skill-builder in English paper piecing – going from regular, straight shapes to learning how to sew deep curves – using the Heartbreaker and Heartburst mini quilt patterns. The benefit of trying out this technique with a mini project is that you see the final result more quickly. We’ll review fussy-cutting techniques, basting methods and how to stitch the pieces together using the whipstitch and flat stitch.

Participants can choose to do either pattern and the patterns and paper pieces will be provided for a Materials Fee of $15/each

Think of this class as speed dating with improvisational piecing techniques that include curves and free-cutting.  It is fast-paced and a lot of fun:  several techniques are introduced and demonstrated one after the other with very little time to second guess, stress or obsess over perfection. Every student will end up with a unique, original quilt in this very democratic class!  The focus here is to explore line, shape and happenstance in abstract design. We will keep things simply graphic by using solid-coloured fabrics in black, white and one pop of colour.  We’ll work on the design wall to jigsaw the improv elements together, seeking balance and creative design opportunities.  Some pre-cutting is required.

This quilt has a multitude of design possibilities for secondary pattern and colour play. Students are always surprised by the complexity involved in piecing this seemingly familiar block. In this workshop Krista shares myriad tips and provides one on one support to achieve accurate rotary cutting skills, perfect scant ¼” seam allowance, accurate piecing without pins and design wall support with fellow students. A colouring page is sent in advance if students wish to plan their quilt before class. Students will likely complete 4 blocks in class.

You’ll install a metal zip pocket, interior slip pocket, magnetic closure and riveted leather handles. Krista will share many tips for bag construction and a professional finish. Bill had always wanted to make a quilt … so he started.  And Bill discovered that when he makes quilts, he doesn’t feel pain!  And he hasn’t stopped. Here are his stories….
